#10985-BANAK PENNANT:
Unique, small size pennant relating to the 1940 invasion
of Denmark & Norway and specifically to the German base
at Banak. The white cotton pennant is of two-
panel construction measuring 13 inches across the top
and 15-1/2 inches in length. It depicts a national eagle
above a coat of arms, all beautifully executed in
fantastic silver and multi-color chain stitch. The coat
of arms depicts a Polar bear, the name “Banak”, a
Danish flag and the year 1940. The pennant relates to
the 1940 invasion and establishment of the base at
Banak Norway. This base was utilized for naval
weather reporting operations to Greenland as well as a
base to several squadrons of Luftwaffe aircraft
from Luftflotte V. A historical and rare example
from the so-called “Weather War” between German and
British units in the Artic region. The pennant shows
dark age toning to the silver threads as well as some
areas of yellowing to the reverse. Condition II- $550.00 |
