The MAX Show Report
Glad to have seen many of you at last month's MAX show, held
once again in Monroeville, PA. Things were a little slow
business wise as I had expected due to our current economy. I
pray that this November we will seen some changes in Washington
that will create a better climate for business and growth. The
show was sold out and a lot of international dealers and
collectors were in attendance. I continue to like the "new" hall
where the MAX show is held, good lighting and lots of space,
although it was better when the hotel was next door and not
miles away. The former Radisson, the site of many of my good
memories is new reopened as a Double Tree hotel. Newly
renovated, its ugly, ultra modern design was not welcoming nor
were the high costs charged for rooms. Gone is the famous lobby
bar and the whole social scene that centered around it. Also new
this year was the return of the live auction, conducted by
Affiliated Auctions. I attended on Thursday night and discovered
a morgue like atmosphere with about 10 bidders sitting in the
audience. Although well organized and professional, this firm
has little experience in Militaria as evidenced by their
catalogue descriptions and price estimates. On top of that, the
auction was live to internet bidders which is typically a turn
off to attendees. None the less, seeing a lot of my fellow
collectors, having a lot of conversation and buying some goodies
for myself made it a good show and one I will return to
faithfully next year. -JC
